Accent Chairs: Different Types and Where to Place Them
More than the extra seating, accent chairs can also instantly add a new look to any space. They come in different designs, silhouettes, and colors so it’s fun to play with different styles. Here are some tips on where to place them as well as their names so you know how to look for them when you go chair shopping.
The Club Chair
Club chairs are roomy armchairs with extra-deep seats, perfect as your accent chair for a reading nook or to complement a sofa in the living room. It’s so comfortable that you’ll probably end up snoozing. Usually, it has a nail head trim or leather upholstery (or both). The name is often connected to gentleman’s club but it actually originated in the design studios of France, fauteuil confortable, or comfy chair.
The Slipper Chair
This accent chair is armless with a petite silhouette. It’s likely closer to the ground than you’re used to but it doesn’t mean that it’s not comfortable. If there’s not enough space in your room, a slipper chair is a great option. You can pair it with a coffee table or to pretty up the boudoir at the end of the bed. During the 18th century, women needed a chair that’s comfy to get in and out while slipping on their shoes, hence, the name slipper chair.
The Wingback Chair
Because of its tall back and dramatic winged sides, the wingback chair is one that’s easy to spot. It’s a perfect companion to a large sofa to give your living room a sense of balance. Wingback chairs are also great next to the fireplace and as an end chair and base of a dining table. It can be a bit heavy because of its size so it’s not an ideal chair to put in a room where you hold events and there’s always re-arranging happening.
The Bergère
This chair looks regal with its exposed wooden frame and upholstered seat and back, but the loose seat cushion makes it look not overly formal. It easily adds a touch of elegance to any space but it’s perfect for a bedroom, or when used in pairs opposite a sofa. It first gained popularity during the 17th century in France as key pieces in the palace.
The Occasional Chair
Occasional chairs are usually lightweight and easy to move when needed. Most designs are armless and it’s versatile enough that you can put it anywhere—even for special occasions like weddings or birthdays. It’s eye-catching and have a shapely silhouette.
The Tub Chair
The arms of tub chairs are higher than other types of chairs. It’s naturally rounded instead of rectangular and has arms attached to the back of the seat. Tub chairs can look modern or traditional in design depending on the fabric materials used.
The Rocking Chair
This chair has gained its place even in the modern living room. There are different styles, some with arms and other armless; sometimes upholstered or with cushions. They’re usually made of wood although there are also other materials. Rocking chairs are timeless but it really depends on how you use it. You can paint it with a bold color to look more modern or just leave it as is.
